Day 1: Takahara
Your journey begins with train travel from Kyōto or Ōsaka to Kii-Tanabe, gateway to the historic Kumano Kodō Trail. The railway hugs the coastline, offering stunning ocean views. From Kii-Tanabe, a local bus takes you to Takijiri, where the Nakahechi portion of the pilgrimage route begins. The path climbs steadily through forested terrain to the ridge-top village of Takahara, taking approximately two hours. Stay in a small, Japanese-style minshuku in Takahara or nearby Kurisugawa, where you'll enjoy delicious home-cooked dinners featuring local seasonal ingredients.
