Day 1: Kamiakizu
Journey by train from Kyoto or Osaka to the small town of Kii-Tanabe on the mystical Kii Peninsula, gateway to the historic Kumano Kodo Trail. The scenic railway runs close to the ocean, offering fine views over the sea. The journey takes approximately 2.5 hours from Osaka or 3 hours from Kyoto, usually requiring a change at Shin-Osaka station. A 15-minute bus ride brings you to the peaceful farming community of Kamiakizu, where you'll stay in a renovated elementary school made of cedar and cypress.
