Self-Guided Kumano Kodo Winter Hiking Tour

Arrival

Arrive in Japan via Kansai International Airport (KIX), the main international gateway for both Kyoto and Osaka. The tour includes a train ticket from Kyoto or Osaka to Kii-Tanabe Station, the starting point for the Kumano Kodō journey. The train journey from Osaka to Kii-Tanabe takes approximately 2.5 hours, while the journey from Kyoto takes around 3 hours and usually requires a transfer at Shin-Osaka Station. From Kii-Tanabe Station, take a 15-minute local bus to Kamiakizu, where the tour begins. Airport transfers are not included, and local bus fares during the tour must be paid directly to the bus driver.

Departure

The tour concludes in Kii-Katsuura. An included train ticket is provided for the journey from Kii-Katsuura Station back to Osaka or Kyoto, with arrival in the mid to late afternoon. From either city, continue to Kansai International Airport (KIX) for your onward flight. Airport transfers are not included, and any local bus journeys outside the included train travel must be paid directly to the bus driver.

Winter (December to February) is an excellent time to hike the Kumano Kodo, as the region experiences minimal snowfall. The air becomes crisp and clear during this drier season, creating peaceful conditions and invigorating scenery. Temperatures typically range from 5-12°C (41-54°F) during the day. The Kumano region normally has high rainfall, but winter is the driest season, making it ideal for hiking while still experiencing winter's chill. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer mild temperatures and beautiful foliage, though with more rainfall. Summer (June-August) is hot, humid, and very wet, making it less suitable for hiking.
