Arrival

Arrive at El Calafate Airport (FTE), the main gateway to southern Patagonia and the starting point for your hiking journey. We recommend arriving one day before the activities begin, as Day 1 starts with an early-morning private transfer to Puerto Punta Bandera for the navigation to Estancia Cristina and Upsala Glacier. From the airport, you can reach El Calafate town by airport transfer, private transfer, taxi or rental car. The airport is approximately 20 km from the town centre, and transfers generally take around 20–30 minutes depending on traffic and conditions. El Calafate is also connected by long-distance buses to destinations including El Chaltén and other Patagonian towns. There is no railway service connecting El Calafate with the main destinations on this itinerary, so onward travel is primarily by road. Your accommodation for the first two nights is Posada Los Álamos in El Calafate.

Departure

The journey concludes on Day 8 after breakfast in El Chaltén. At the appropriate time, depart Destino Sur Hotel & Spa by private transfer toward El Calafate Airport (FTE) for your onward flight. The journey from El Chaltén to El Calafate Airport is by road and takes approximately 3–4 hours, depending on weather and road conditions. Travellers may also use regular or private buses between El Chaltén and El Calafate, while taxis and private transfers are available locally; however, for this itinerary, private transportation is included. We recommend allowing sufficient time for the transfer and airport check-in, particularly for domestic or connecting flights.

The best season for this Patagonia hiking journey is November to February, with temperatures generally ranging from 10–20°C (50–68°F) and up to 17 hours of daylight, providing excellent conditions for hiking.

March and April are good months, with temperatures of approximately 5–15°C (41–59°F) and fewer crowds.

May and September–October are mixed months, with temperatures around 0–12°C (32–54°F) and more variable weather and trail conditions.

June–August are considered off-season, with temperatures ranging from approximately −3–6°C (27–43°F), along with snow, shorter daylight hours and harsher winter conditions.
